Cooperation - International Competition Network
With the growing integration of the world economy and consequent interdependence of regional and national economies, it has become necessary to go beyond bilateral relationships and establish multilateral cooperation that guarantees coordination between the growing number of bodies responsible for the application of the competition rules.
It was against this background that, in October 2001, the creation of the ICN was announced, a project which, at the beginning, involved 14 jurisdictions, namely, Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States and Zambia.
Currently, the ICN has over a hundred members. It is the first time that such a large number of countries at a world level has been involved in an initiative of this kind, with a view to exchanging experience and debating competition issues associated with the growing globalisation of the world economy. This Forum's main objective is to formulate recommendations for best practice in the field of competition policy, though these recommendations are not binding.
Any national or regional competition authority responsible for applying the competition rules may join the ICN.
